Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria and found common among animals. Brucellosis affects animals such as sheep, goats, cattle, deer, elk, pigs, dogs and other animals. Humans get infected if you come in contact with animals or animal products that are infected with the bacteria. In humans, the symptoms of brucellosis are similar to the flu and may include fever, sweats, headaches, back pains, weakness etc. You may note that brucellosis may result in severe infections of the central nervous systems or lining of the heart. The other long term symptoms of brucellosis include recurrent fever, joint pain, and fatigue. Brucellosis is very common in countries where animal disease control programs are not very effective. Brucellosis is found to be common in countries where the sanitary facilities and public health programs are not effective. It is reported that brucellosis spread from person to person is very rare. However, mothers who are breast-feeding may transmit the infection to their infants. Sexual transmission is also possible.
